The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a Small Craft and High Surf Advisory for Barbados, warning of hazardous sea conditions caused by above-normal swells.
The advisory comes as a strengthening Atlantic high-pressure system generates strong winds and large swells east of Barbados.
Reports from a NOAA buoy located 600 kilometers offshore indicate swell heights of approximately 2.5 meters, with forecasts predicting further increases in wave activity over the coming days.
A Small Craft Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots and sea swells of 2.5 to 3.0 meters (8 to 10 feet) are expected within 36 hours.
A High Surf Advisory is issued when breaking waves are forecast to threaten life and property in the surf zone.
The BMS warns that the conditions could pose significant risks to marine users and beachgoers. Small craft operators should prepare for challenging and potentially hazardous conditions in open water, where large swells may impact vessel operation. Beach erosion is likely, with some beaches, especially those below cliffs, expected to be submerged during high tide. The advisory also notes a possible risk of injury or loss of life due to the dangerous sea conditions.
The advisory was issued at noon on Saturday and will be updated by noon on Sunday or sooner if conditions worsen.
