Jamaican wins Fintech contest

Nine Caribbean-based entrepreneurs competed for cash prizes during the FiX25 Startup Pitch Competition, held on the final day of the FiX25 conference yesterday.

The event, powered by Fintech Islands, took place at the Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle Resort in St Philip from Wednesday.

The competition showcased three standout fintech start-ups from across the region. Khary Sharpe from Jamaica emerged as the winner, securing a prize of US$10 000 for HeadOffice. His software provides localised support for accountants and entrepreneurs in Latin America and the Caribbean, helping them manage taxes and payroll in non-United States denominations.

Innovative features

David Dick, representing Curaçao, was second, receiving US$5 000 for Monytri, a fintech platform designed to democratise financial literacy. It offers innovative

features like stock gifting and tailored financial education tools, enabling users to learn about personal finance and grow their wealth.

Rounding out the top three was Raquel Seville of Jamaica, whose company Dataffluent won US$2 500. The research and data science firm specialises in financial insights and modelling for publicly-traded entities in developing and emerging markets.

The pitch competition featured a panel of six judges who evaluated nine finalists from across the Caribbean. Participants presented their innovative solutions in the morning, with results announced in the afternoon. (DS)
