Chairman of the Association of Public Transport Owners (APTO) Anwar Nana is calling for the speedy implementation of the cashless system for public service vehicles (PSVs) in light of recent robberies.

In an interview yesterday, Nana condemned a recent robbery on board a PSV in St Philip where the perpetrator was reported as demanding money and was alleged to also have a gun.

Nana said society had become violent and taking away the incentive of would-be robbers was vital.

“We would like [violent incidents on vans] to stop. We need to have the cashless system in place to prevent these robberies. We need Government to legislate the cashless fare collection which should take cash off the vans and be a deterrent for these robberies,” he said.
