The West Indies Women ended their Under-19 Women’s World Cup campaign with a ten-wicket defeat to Bangladesh at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, earlier today.
This defeat condemned the West Indies to the bottom of their Super Six group with four defeats and zero points.
After being sent in to bat, the regional side was restricted to 54-6 in their allotted overs. Bangladesh openers Juairiya Ferdous (25*) and Fahomida Choya (14*) required only 8.5 overs to chase down the modest total in the rain-affected fixture, which allowed each side to bat just 13 overs. They were aided by 16 extras due to errant bowling.
The West Indies’ batting woes persisted as they stumbled to 22-4 inside 6.1 overs. Off-spinner Nishita Akter Nishi ripped through the top order with a devastating new-ball spell, finishing with figures of 3-11. From 37-5, middle-order batter Amrita Ramtahal top-scored with 16 not out, helping the Girls in Maroon post a total of 54 runs.
Defending such a low total was always going to be a challenge. Captain Samara Ramnath deployed six bowlers in search of breakthroughs, but Bangladesh remained composed in their chase and secured third place in the group behind semi-finalists India and Australia.
