Barbadian-born cricketer Roland Butcher has been nominated by the West Indies Cricket Development Academy Limited for induction into the 2025 Cricket Hall of Fame, recognizing his trailblazing career and contributions to the sport.

Butcher etched his name in history as the first Black player to represent England in international cricket, making his Test debut in 1981 at Kensington Oval in Barbados. His distinguished playing career spanned over two decades, during which he competed at the highest level for England and represented Middlesex from 1974 to 1990, when he eventually retired.

Beyond his playing days, Butcher has remained involved in cricket, serving as a selector for the West Indies team for a year and championing the sport’s growth in the Caribbean as President of the Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club.

Junior Earl Codlin, President of the West Indies Cricket Development Academy Limited, expressed his enthusiasm for Butcher’s nomination.

“We are thrilled to recommend Roland Butcher for induction into the 2025 Cricket Hall of Fame,” Codlin stated. “His achievements on and off the field are a testament to his hard work, perseverance, and love for the sport. We believe his contributions to cricket warrant this recognition, and we look forward to seeing him take his rightful place among the legends of the game.”

The former England cricketer received the Freedom of the City of London award on October 17, 2022, at Guildhall, London, after being nominated by City of London Corporation elected members Andrien Meyers and Keith Bottomley. (JC)
