A tsunami warning issued for several countries within 620 miles of the epicentre of Saturday evening’s 7.6 magnitude earthquake in the Caribbean Sea has been lifted for all nations except Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and Honduras.
Initially, tsunami threats were warned for more than a dozen countries, including Jamaica. However, the United States (US) government monitoring agency later cancelled all but three of the alerts, though it cautioned that “small sea level changes may occur”.
According to an AFP report, the US Tsunami Warning System warned that waves as high as nearly 10 feet (three metres) were possible in some coastal areas of Cuba, while waves of up to three feet could hit Honduras and the Cayman Islands.
It noted that the Cayman Islands government warned in a message on its website, “Residents living near the coastline are encouraged to move inland.” (Jamaica Observer)
