Officers at the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA), Ministry of Energy and Business, have been taking advantage of recent special events to sensitise vendors about the importance of labelling.
The officers visited the Holetown Festival and Agrofest to share valuable information with the vendors.
Acting Senior Trade Officer at the DCCA and Liquor Licence Authority, Alison Archer, stressed the importance of the exercises and said the visits were twofold.
“We are checking compliance to see if persons have their liquor licence, and we are also educating the vendors we are interacting with. This is important because it allows us to find out what is wrong with our system and if people are having any challenges. So, this interaction is good for them and for us, too,” Archer said.
She noted that the DCCA also enforces standards, and officers discussed
the importance of labelling toys and locally produced items, including soaps.
“Some people don’t understand that toys have to be labelled because some of them are dangerous to children, depending on the age. For example, we are finding that sometimes sensory toys, such as the popular Slime fluid, have no individual labelling.
“It seems they have been taken from the original manufacturers’ boxes, which contained all the necessary information, and sold individually. So, there is no information on the container which speaks to the age group to use it, etcetera,” Archer said. (BGIS)
