Several secondary school students with an interest in theatre arts had the opportunity to fuel their passion during an interactive and engaging open day at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination on Friday. It was hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Culture at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.
The event comprised four sessions in the areas of music, dance, theatre and film, giving students the chance to see, learn and participate in the various programmes offered at the university.
Students in the theatre arts workshop had the opportunity to showcase their skill and talent through several improv dramatisations as their peers and instructor watched on and applauded in amazement.
Those interested in film did a sit-in with the cinematographer and learnt all about the distinctive and skilful art of cinematography. They even had the opportunity to watch and critique a film.
Students who stopped by the dance workshop had the chance to be among some of the dancers from the programme who demonstrated a few moves.
Rainy Demerson, lecturer of dance in the Department of Creative and Performing Arts, said the university hoped to recruit new students and the open day was an opportunity for secondary school students to come in and be exposed to the arts and get a taste of what the faculty had to offer.
“This is something we have done for the past two years and it’s just a way for the students to experience a little bit of what our undergraduate students learn about and what they experience when they visit the facilities. We are hoping to recruit some new students and this allows them to learn while they’re here, to actively engage and be like an undergrad student for a day,” she said. (AJ)
