LONDON – Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley Friday held talks with the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, saying it was important for the two countries to find common “things that are necessary for us to have a healthy global commons that can benefit all of us.

“We’ve had the opportunity to meet a number of times since you’ve assumed office,” Mottley told reporters speaking next to Sir Keir from inside No 10 Downing Street.

In a message she posted later on Instagram, Prime Minister Mottley said that “we discussed  matters related to the deepening crisis in Haiti, regional security, the climate crisis, development, and ways to further strengthen the longstanding relationship between Barbados and the United Kingdom”.

Sir Keir said that the United Kingdom’s history with Barbados is “long and rich” adding it was a “pleasure and a privilege” to welcome Mottley, who has been leader of the Barbados Labour Party since 2008, to Downing Street.

“We’ve known each other many, many years as good colleagues and now as leaders who work together, think alike.”

Barbados transitioned to a republic within the Commonwealth in 2021, replacing the monarchy with a ceremonial president.

“The world in which we live is a very different world, even from when you assumed office in July,” she added. (CMC)
