A budding football career may be on the horizon for 20-year-old Seth Jervier, a student at the Barbados Community College (BCC), who is currently interning with the Barbados Football Association (BFA).
The internship is part of a long-standing partnership between the two institutions.
Jervier, a former local footballer, is pursuing an Associate Degree in Computer Studies at BCC, building on a previous qualification in Architecture.
He joined the BFA to gain hands-on experience in a professional sporting environment—but says the opportunity has already begun to shape his outlook in unexpected ways.
“These kinds of opportunities are so important for young people, as they provide exposure to a professional environment, helping to build your workplace skills and confidence,” he said. “They can also introduce you to new career paths, and my experience with the BFA so far has sparked an interest in possibly pursuing coaching in the future. I’m really grateful for this opportunity to broaden my horizons.”
His placement forms part of a partnership that has existed for more than a decade, offering BCC students the chance to contribute to the operations of the island’s premier footballing body and gain insight into the many careers that support the sport.
President of the BFA, Randy Harris, welcomed Jervier and praised the impact of the programme in nurturing youth development beyond the pitch.
“The BFA is firmly committed to creating spaces where our young people can thrive, both on and off the pitch,” Harris said. “Our vision is not only for sustainable football development, but also for long-lasting community development. We will continue to provide these kinds of opportunities to strengthen and empower our nation’s youth through as many facets of football as possible.”
He also encouraged other organisations and individuals to come on board to support young people like Jervier, particularly during such a crucial time.
“As we strive to use football to make a positive contribution to the national landscape, the BFA welcomes expressions of interest in partnering with us—especially when it comes to empowering our next generation,” Harris added. (JC)
