PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The People’s National Movement (PNM) Monday night conceded defeat in the general election and extended congratulations to its opponents the United National Congress (UNC).
PNM leader and former prime minister Dr Keith Rowley told reporters that “it is not a good night for the PNM. From all reports we have lost”.
“From what we have heard it is clear that we have lost the elections,” he added.
Prime Minister Stuart Young said that the members of the population have spoken “and despite tonight I will fight for Trinidad and Tobago”.
“We will hold the UNC and the coalition of self interest to the coals,” he added.
Young said he expects the party to win 10 or 12 seats in the general election. The party contested all 41 seats in the election.
Earlier, the leader of the main opposition United National Congress (UNC), Kamla Persad Bissessar, as expected won the Siparia seat and predicted that the party was on the verge of winning Monday’s general elections.
“First let me thank Almighty God. We have had a very very clean campaign, very strong campaign. I feel very confident of a very good result,” said the 73-year-old Persad Bissessar.
“Let me thank the people of Siparia and at this time I can declare Siparia safely won. So I can declare the first seat in this election,” she said, adding that the feed back from the other constituencies “is very very good.” (CMC)
