Independent candidate Steffanie Williams, a first-timer at the polls who only paid in her deposit on Monday, admitted it was a bit overwhelming but exciting at the same time.

She was one of four people contesting the St James North by-election.

“The nomination has been very interesting. This was my first time doing anything like this so I’m very excited. I consider this the getting-my-feet-wet stage,” the former St Leonard’s School and Lester Vaughan School student told the media after exiting Gordon Greenidge Primary School.

Williams, founder of a charity and a book club, said her eyes were wide open.

“I’m really looking forward to what comes next,” she said.

She revealed that before yesterday, she had canvassed Trents and Rock Dundo.

“Most of the constituents, they are not happy with what is going on. They feel like they have been left out. I’m going to bring personality, truth and be a voice for the voiceless.”

She said that with the experience gained in starting the book club and charity, she intends to help young people in particular and elderly Barbadians, who complained about feeling lonely and not being taken seriously. (BA)
