Nomination Day for the May 21 St James North by-election proved to be a tumultuous one for candidate Alex Mitchell, president of the Bajan Free Party.

He was dressed in a bulletproof vest for the second time in as many days. His nomination was delayed until after 2 p.m., more than an hour after Independent candidate Steffanie Williams had completed the process.

He arrived promptly at 11 o’clock, but acquiesced to Barbados Labour Party candidate Chad Blackman while waiting for the arrival of proposers and seconders.

Still, long afterwards, he was two people short.

“Two of the people I had left because of the scrutiny. They don’t want the media attention. Some of this is because of you guys,” he told reporters when asked if he was sure he would be able to find enough support.

Mitchell then suggested that if the media left, he would be able to get everything done.

He was finally nominated just after 2 p.m.

The other candidate is Felicia Dujon of the Democratic Labour Party, who was the first to complete the nomination process. (BA)
