Jeffrey Barrow is facing a challenging road to recovery after a brutal attack at the hands of a robber on Belmont Road, St Michael, last Thursday.

When the MIDWEEK NATION followed up with the 65-year-old St George resident moments after he received a scheduled medical check-up yesterday, he disclosed that doctors found a fracture to his eye socket.

“The news I got from the doctor just now is not the best news you would want to hear. It will be a slow process of healing.

“A bone in the bottom of my eye socket is fractured or broken, along with [some] other few fine bones. An operation is imminent. It is now to work out the schedule on that and that involves some more tests. I have to go to a specialist to see if surgery is required,” he said.

Along with the physical injuries, Barrow is still grappling with the psychological effects of the ordeal, constantly replaying it in his mind.

“Believe you me, this morning, although it was near daybreak, it would play on my mind as if the fight was going on at present.

“People know that I don’t hate. I share everything first, and if he [the attacker] was a person that say, ‘Sir, I’m very hungry, can you give me a ten-dollar to buy a drink or whatever’, I will oblige. That’s the kind of person I am.

“But, furthermore, now that I go through my medical examination, I realise I was so close to death. So I am blessed to be

alive, to be truthful,” he said.

Love shown

Video footage of Barrow’s attack circulated on social media on the day that the assault occurred, drawing the ire of Barbadians who condemned the violent attack on the senior citizen.

Barrow said that following last week’s interview with this newspaper, an outpouring of well-wishes followed him everywhere he went.

“The love shown to me has been tremendous for sure, it’s emotional at times. Relatives, friends, even people that I don’t know, and the Church of the Nazarene. There’s so many people . . . To put it in a parlance, I didn’t know I was loved by so many people, but those that don’t know me, they got to know me over the story that was published,” he said.

A person of interest is in custody regarding the assault and robbery and police communications and public affairs officer, Acting Inspector Ryan Brathwaite, disclosed that the suspect has not been charged. ( JRN)
