The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a Small Craft and High Surf Advisory.

The advisory comes as windy conditions and above-normal swell heights are expected to impact marine areas around the island.

The advisory, issued at 12 p.m., warns of moderate to rough seas generated by strong surface winds peaking near 25 knots (45 km/h), with gusts likely near showers. Marine conditions are forecast to feature easterly swells ranging from 2.0 to 3.0 metres (7 to 10 feet) in open waters.

According to the BMS, large open water swells could prove hazardous for some vessels, particularly smaller craft, and may increase the risk of injury or loss of life.

The Small Craft Advisory is issued when sustained winds between 20 to 25 knots and/or sea swells between 2.5 and 3.0 metres are expected. A High Surf Advisory is issued when wave action poses a potential threat to life and property within the surf zone.

The advisory is expected to remain in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, May 26, or may be lifted earlier if conditions improve. (BMS)
