Julian Renaldo Nicholls’ reason for doing 114 kilometres per hour (kph) on the Belle Section of the ABC Highway was that “it was late”.

His reason for having 110 grammes of cannabis was that he was going to a party.

On Friday, he was ordered to pay for both when he appeared in the Oistins Magistrates’ Court.

Nicholls, a 31-year-old landscaper, of Montrose, Christ Church, pleaded guilty to driving at 114 kph on the highway, around 9:50 p.m. on June 12, as well as failing to produce identification when asked to do so.

He also admitted having cannabis, having a traffickable quantity of the drug and having it with intent to supply on the same date.

“I get the drugs because I was going to a party later on that night. The drugs was for me and two other people. It is just unfortunate that I get caught,” he said.

He was speeding because it was late “and I just wanted to get home”.

Acting Chief Magistrate Deidre McKenna reprimanded and discharged him for simple possession and not producing identification, and convicted, reprimanded and discharged him for possession with intent to supply.

She, however, fined him $750 forthwith or three months in prison for speeding and $1 500 for having a traffickable quantity of cannabis. Both fines were immediately paid by his mother.

Prosecutor Sergeant Shane Chase said police were conducting speed checks along the Belle section of the highway when Nicholls’ Toyota MZE was clocked at 114 kph.

He was pursued and stopped near Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall.

As police approached the car, they noticed a strong scent of marijuana.

When they searched, they found a bag of cannabis under the front passenger seat.

When asked to account for the drugs, Nicholls said: “It is mine. Give me a break, officer.”

The cannabis had an estimated street value of $500.
