Supastar Izzy is getting in on the Crop Over action.
The singer-songwriter made that announcement as he released his 2025 sweet soca song, Addicted.
He described the track as a song for the women whom he hopes to uplift this season.
“In March, I was coming back home from performing at a show in Canada. I was just reflecting and I said Crop Over time coming to Barbados soon. I was on the airplane and the energy and the vibe come to me and I said will build a girl song,” he said.
He was speaking to the Weekend Buzz at Belmont Road, St Michael, recently as he promoted the track.
“I went to Dwaingerous and tell him I got some songs and that we got to do something. He built the rhythm. I recorded a little demo and then a couple weeks time, we went back and recorded the song in full,” he said.
He suggested that there were too many instances where women were criticised.
“The song Addicted is for the ladies, telling the ladies some sweet things, bringing lunch for the ladies and making the ladies feel good again.
“You don’t want to go to the party and songs playing and DJs playing and you’re talking down the females. We don’t deal with them things over here. We uplift,” he added.
While this is his first soca release, Supastar Izzy, whose name is Jamal Greene, is no stranger to music.
Stage name
He previously performed under the stage name Supastar and released reggae tracks such as Blessings Ova Me, and conscious tracks such as No More War and Pressure Point with the High Grade Band.
Although
Addiction is a slight change, he defended the soca art form and his artistic versatility.
“I always put out conscious music, but I love soca also. The beats and the rhythms remind me of certain African vibes, so it’s a natural thing.I always put out reality. I always put out life. If I speak about sadness, violence, or marijuana, it’s all life. Just like a pastor would preach and speak about different topics in life,’I and I’ speak about different topics.
“Everything got a place. There’s a time to be serious and a time for fun and my contribution here is to make people feel good,” he added.
While pushing his songs, he hopes to also write for other artistes.
“I was a writing machine from a youth. From 13 to 14, I had books of songs, so I want to write for a couple of artistes because I know enough artistes out there that could sing but they can’t write,” he said.
