Turn yourself into the police.
This was the plea from president of the Barbados Road Safety Association, Roland Lowe, to the driver involved in the hit-and-run incident in Lodge Road, Christ Church on Tuesday night, resulting in the death of 35-year-old Laqwain Morris, of Silver Hill, Christ Church.
“There needs to be a level of accountability on the driver’s part as he or she would not like to endure this pain if it was their family member who was the deceased, “Have said though there is shock in the aftermath of the incident, the driver should come forward as soon as possible, because family members will want closure.”
According to police reports, the deceased was riding a motorcycle around 9:45 p.m. when he was struck by a car. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found no signs of life and a medical doctor later confirmed his death.
Lowe also urged Barbadians to practice adequate and appropriate safety measures when operating vehicles and to be aware of pedestrians and other motorists on the road.
“If you are a pedestrian who walks or exercises on the roadside during the night or early morning hours when it is still dark out, I encourage you to wear special reflective vests or bright colours so that drivers will be able to see you,” he said.
This latest road fatality would be the second hit-and-run recorded for the year.
Pedestrian
Police were called to
Waterford Road, St Michael on May 12 and according to reports, at approximately 9:50 p.m., a vehicle travelling from the Clyde Walcott Roundabout toward Bridgetown collided with a pedestrian. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries. That person was later identified as 70-year-old Hensley Hinkson.
Lowe also recalled the hit-and-run incident of Akia John-McQuilkin, the daughter of Barbadian entertainer, Omar Marzville McQuilkin, which occurred in May 2023.
He said that during this time, he reached out to the public urging the driver to come forward, an effort which turned out to be successful.
Police at the Oistins Station have launched an investigation in this recent case and are treating the incident as an unnatural death.
