Government targets diaspora investors

Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn says Government is developing an investment opportunity for Barbadians living overseas.

With the authorities issuing more Government paper, including the first-ever bond denominated in United States (US) dollars, he said Bajans in the diaspora would also have the chance to invest in their homeland.

“Going forward, there will be opportunities for the diaspora to also participate, and there will be an option for the diaspora as well to pay in whatever currency they can because whilst it maybe a US denominated bond, people may be living in Europe or wherever part of the world,” Straughn said.

“We want to allow people to invest using the currency of the country in which they reside, but equally for them to be able to ensure then that payments can be made in Barbados dollars, either to their families or whatever the case is.

“Because you would appreciate people do remittances and a whole range of things and therefore we want to be able to put those kinds of mechanisms in place whereby someone in the diaspora can put some money into a specific security, gain some interest and that interest, as well as the investment, could be paid in local dollars to the person of their choice,” he explained.

The minister said this was part of Government’s effort to “innovate around how we can encourage as much as possible Barbadians at home as well as the diaspora, to be able to invest in the success of the country”. (SC)
