Weymouth Wales ignited the CFU Club Shield with a dazzling 3-1 victory over Police FC of Trinidad and Tobago, delivering a powerful opening statement at the Hasley Crawford Stadium on Sunday night.

Wales dominated the encounter and won thanks to two first half goals from playmaker Andre Applewaithe who netted the opener in the third minute with a clever finish on the line and then hit home a left-footed shot in the 43rdminute.

The second goal was very well worked as Applewaithe found space in the Police box and showed great control and composure before unleashing a powerful shot to beat the keeper.

Police pulled a goal back in first half injury-time after a mix-up in the Wales backline allowed Kwesi Allen to score from close range. After a tense second half the ever-dangerous Applewaithe produced another moment of magic to help seal the result. He broke free down the left side and slipped by two Police defenders with ease.

He delivered a brilliant ball into the Police box which Romario Harewood slotted into the back of the net in the 88thminute. Police FC, to their credit, fought hard in the second half and tested the Bajans’ resolve.

The Shield’s Swiss-format group stage means every match is a must-win and Following the superb win in their opener Wales will now prepare for their second preliminary match against Wolues of British Virgin Island, which will be played at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Tuesday at 4pm. The tournament features 24 teams from across the region playing 28 matches. (PS)
