The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a Flash-Flood Watch and Severe Thunderstorm Advisory for Barbados as a strong tropical wave impacts the island today.

Forecasters warn that conditions are expected to peak this afternoon, with some improvement anticipated later tonight into Monday.

There is a medium possibility of significant flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Runoff from higher elevations may result in fast-moving water flows carrying debris, while water pooling on roads and fields, especially near hills and coastal areas, is likely. Soil erosion on exposed land surfaces is also possible.

Lightning activity at or near populated areas could lead to power outages if strikes affect utility infrastructure. Residents and visitors are reminded that lightning strikes can be life-threatening. The advisory notes that both the Flash-Flood Watch and Severe Thunderstorm Advisory may be upgraded to warnings at short notice.

The tropical wave continues to produce pockets of deep convection as it moves westward across Barbados and the eastern Caribbean. This activity remains sporadic, creating uncertainty about the exact location of showers and thunderstorms.

Rainfall accumulation of 1 to 2 inches, with higher amounts in heavy showers, is possible. Occasional gusty winds and thunderstorms may also develop this afternoon and into tonight.

The public is urged to follow guidance from the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) and to monitor updates from the BMS, DEM, the Government Information Service (GIS), and local media outlets.

A Flash-Flood Watch means that conditions are favourable for flash flooding within the watch area over the next six hours. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.
A Severe Thunderstorm Advisory indicates that significant lightning activity is possible within the next six hours.

This advisory was issued at 12 noon today and will be updated at 6 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant. (BMS)
