Several residents in some Christ Church areas awoke yesterday to the smell of what they believed was natural gas. However, the National Petroleum Corporation swiftly moved in to deal with the issue.

A Kendal Hill resident reported smelling the strange odour from as early as 3 a.m., while another said that she smelled it from even earlier.

“Since 1 a.m. It made me get up to make sure my gas was turned off,” said a female resident of Kendal Crescent.

Another resident, a 48-year-old man, said: “When I woke up this morning just before 7 a.m., I smell gas strong, strong. But since I don’t have a gas stove I knew it was an external issue, so I went back to sleep. When I woke back after 10 a.m. the smell was gone.”

Small leak

The National Petroleum Corporation said that it quickly dealt with the matter. and in a statement issued shortly after the

complaints, explained that there was a small leak.

It stated that the strong scent of gas experienced in some areas of Christ Church was “traced to a small leak of the nature gas odorant”.

“This odorant, which is not hazardous to humans, is added to provide a distinct smell to the gas, usually like rotten eggs so it can be easily detected.

“As a result, some residents may have detected the smell of the odorant and interpreted the same to mean there was a natural gas leak. We are pleased to confirm this issue has been successfully resolved,” the statement added.
