The National Union Of Public Workers (NUPW) is calling for greater protection for sanitation workers after one of them was attacked last week during an attempted robbery.

Acting General Secretary Wayne Walrond said the worker, who was targeted for his jewellery, reportedly was confronted by a man, armed with a cutlass, while doing his job.

Walrond told the MIDWEEK NATION the union learned of the incident through media reports, and it was the latest in a series of troubling attacks against staff of the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA). He said the situation was unacceptable and workers should never have to fear for their lives while performing such an important public service.

“We are very concerned about this. Sanitation workers have a right to work in an environment that is free from violence and abuse. They help keep Barbados clean and healthy, and they should not have to be worried about being attacked while doing so,” he said.
