The 2025 edition of the Barbados Road Tennis Open (BRTO) climaxed on Saturday night at the Wildey Gymnasium with Shakeem Nurse dethroning three-time king Mark ‘Venom’ Griffith and Sheldene Walrond taking her second title.

The spectators following the action in the Gym, online and on television were truly entertained when Nurse avenged back-to-back losses from 2022 and 2023 by stunning the previously invincible Griffith in straight sets and Walrond came from a game down to stop Rachel Smith.

Fittingly, 20-year-old Nurse’s ascension to the road tennis throne highlighted a tournament where the youth excelled. The greatest show of excellence came from Jael Greaves, 17, who surged from two games down to take the third spot from the experienced Davien “Force Ripe” Taylor.

Greaves, who has never won any of the junior competitions, made the 2025 BRTO memorable by shocking giant Antonio “Lil Man” Daniel, Winston “Charleslie” Griffith and Dwayne Lynch to reach the semi-finals for the first time. (KB)
