The appeal brought by Dennis Alphonso “Sheriff” Maynard against his 20-year sentence for having two illegal guns will be heard next year.

Maynard, of Roach Village, St George, was convicted in November 2023 for having a .40 semi-automatic pistol, a .22 semi-automatic pistol and 39 bullets on October 6, 2018. The matter was prosecuted by Principal State Counsel Neville Watson.
Justice Carlisle Greaves gave Maynard a starting sentence of 20 years but ordered him to serve 18 years after deductions.
Maynard was given time served after he was also found guilty of having 1.25 grammes of marijuana.
His attorney Andrew Pilgrim, SC, who represented him in association with attorney Summer Hassell, later appealed the conviction and sentence.
Yesterday, Principal State Counsel Romario Straker applied for an adjournment, citing the absence of Principal State Counsel Watson.
Pilgrim did not object. President of the Court, Justice of Appeal Francis Belle, who presided with
Justices of Appeal Jacqueline Cornelius-Thorne and Victoria Charles-Clarke, set March 4 as the date for the appeal.
During the trial, the court had heard that police executed a search warrant at Survivors Bar & Chill Spot, an establishment owned by Maynard, and found the weapons in an encased ledge, in a room which served as a kitchen/office.
In his statement from the dock, Maynard said he had leased his bar to Anthony Williams, also known as “Hyper”, and Ricardel “Brekky” Herbert, to hold a fete. He said he handed over keys to “Hyper” on October 5 and went out until after midnight. He denied knowledge of the guns.
“I don’t know anything about them,” Maynard said he told lawmen. (HLE)
