A Jamaican accused of rape was remanded to prison after he could not find a surety when he appeared in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Orville Fitzroy Sergeant, a 26-year-old mason of Madison Terrace, Deacons Farm, St Michael, was not required to plead to having sexual intercourse with a woman without her consent, knowing she did not consent or being reckless as to whether she consented on September 26.
Prosecutor Sergeant Reginald Blackman, who objected to bail for the accused, cited the strength of the evidence as he revealed there was CCTV footage available.
He said the accused was not a national of Barbados and had no status here.
Sergeant Blackman said the prosecution feared that if the accused was granted bail he would abscond or intimidate the witness.
The prosecutor also asked that the accused be remanded for his own safety, saying the alleged offence has caused a commotion in the community.
The accused, in his bail application, denied the allegation, stating that he had been in Barbados for the past seven months.
Magistrate Manila Renee offered the accused man bail.
“I’m doing so cognisant of the concerns raised by the prosecution, but you have to get someone to sign,” the Magistrate said.
However, the accused said he had no one to sign as surety.
Magistrate Renee then remanded him to Dodds Prison until October 31. (HLE)
