The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a flash-flood warning and a severe thunderstorm watch for the island.
According to the BMS, maximum rainfall accumulations of between 40 and 75 millimetres are expected as heavy to intense showers continue to affect the island this afternoon. The excessive rainfall could result in flooding across low-lying areas, particularly in central and eastern districts and surrounding communities.
Residents are being advised to exercise caution as runoff from higher elevations may cause flooding, soil erosion, or land slippage on exposed or scarred surfaces. Water accumulation on roads and in open fields is also likely.
The Met Office has also cautioned that lightning activity associated with the thunderstorms could lead to power outages if strikes affect utility infrastructure. Members of the public are urged to take necessary precautions, avoid flooded roads, and follow guidance from the Department of Emergency Management.
A thunderstorm watch indicates that scattered thunderstorms are either occurring or expected to affect between 25 and 50 per cent of the island within 48 hours.
The warning is expected to remain in effect until 6 p.m. or earlier if conditions improve. (BMS)
