A superb allround performance from Deswin Currency led Wildey to victory over Gladiola in the grand final of the Barbados Cricket Association’s Super 50 final at Kensington Oval on Sunday.

Wildey batted first and made 227-9 off their 50 overs which proved enough as Gladiola were bowled out for 176 off 37.2 overs to win by 49 runs. It gave Wildey back-to-back titles following their win last year.

The confident Currency came to the crease with his team tottering at 130-7 and topscored 56 not out off 62 balls which included four boundaries and a six. He shared a crucial last wicket stand of 47 with Tariq O’neal, who made nine not out.

The 27-year-old Currency returned with his left-arm spin to take 2-31 off eight overs. O’neal, the teenaged off-spinner, was also exceptional with the ball as he took 5-29 off his 10 overs to destroy the Gladiola batting. He ended the tournament as the joint highest wicket-taker with 18 scalps.

“This is a great win for us, and I feel really good to come out here and perform for the team. To do it with the bat was good to get us out of trouble at 130 for seven … I felt I batted really well. Then with the ball, that was also pleasing,” Currency told NATION online. “This was a great team win and everyone in the camp is happy with the victory. We came here to win and we conquered. This is looking like a good season for us as we’re leading the three-day competition, so two titles in one season would be magnificent.” (PS)
