The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a Flash-Flood Watch for the island as excessive rainfall continues to affect low-lying areas this afternoon.

According to the BMS, instability trailing the tropical wave that impacted Barbados over the weekend is producing moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall accumulations of up to 1 to 1.5 inches. Saturated soils from the weekend’s rainfall increase the potential for localised flash-flooding.

The agency has warned that some soil erosion may occur on exposed or scarred land surfaces, while water settlement on roads and fields could lead to delays on certain traffic routes. Rising water levels in ponds and other small water bodies are also possible.

A Flash-Flood Watch indicates that rapid flooding is possible, generally within two hours, but does not mean flooding is certain.

The watch is in effect immediately and will remain until 6 p.m. today or sooner if conditions improve.
