The dark plume of smoke seen rising over St Thomas this morning is the result of a controlled burning exercise being conducted by the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) at the Mangrove Landfill.

SSA Public Relations Officer confirmed to Nation News that there was no fire at the facility, explaining that the activity is part of the Authority’s regular exercises.

Concern was raised on social media earlier today after photos of the thick smoke began circulating, prompting speculation about a possible fire.
