The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a flash-flood warning for northern sections of the island as unstable weather continues to produce heavy rainfall this afternoon.

According to the BMS, excessive rain is already causing flooding in low-lying districts, with runoff from higher elevations expected to worsen conditions. Soil erosion and possible land slippage are also concerns on exposed or scarred hillsides. Water is settling on roadways, fields, coastal routes, and near ponds and other water bodies.

Officials warn that large debris could be carried downslope in fast-moving water, increasing risks in areas at the foot of hills and along the coast.

The current system is being driven by low-level instability supported by mid- to upper-level atmospheric conditions. Rainfall reports show three inches have already fallen, with an additional inch expected through the remainder of the afternoon along with periods of moderate to heavy showers, rain and isolated thunderstorms.

A flash-flood warning means flooding is occurring or is imminent, generally within two hours.

This warning was issued at 3 p.m. (BMS)
