Questions are mounting over the Barbados National Performing Arts Centre in Newton, Christ Church, (at right) as work at the multimillion-dollar facility appears to have stalled.
Government previously indicated the project was scheduled for completion in 2026.
The first phase of the centre was unveiled with much fanfare during CARIFESTA XV, opening with the Ghanaian theatrical production Mansa Musa. At the time, the 35 000 square-foot structure was described as a temporary but fully functional events pavilion while work continued on the larger permanent development.
Nearly a year later, however, the facility has remained inactive since the CARIFESTA showcase, with evidence of construction material on site, but no work taking place.
Equally concerning for many in the cultural community is the absence of clear updates from Government on the status of the ambitious project, which was touted as a transformative space for Barbados’ arts and entertainment sector.
Efforts to get a comment from Trevor Prescod, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Pan African Affairs and Heritage were unsuccessful. (NS)
