Barbados opened the page on relationships between the Caribbean and West Africa with the official launch of direct flights from Lagos, Nigeria, yesterday.

The inaugural flight, facilitated through Nigerian airline Air Peace Limited, officially commenced on May 24, connecting the Caribbean to 21 domestic cities in Nigeria and other destinations across West Africa.

Speaking during yesterday’s launch at Hotel Indigo in Hastings, Christ Church, Minister of Tourism and International Transport Ian Gooding-Edghill said it opened a wealth of opportunities for Barbados, establishing the country as a regional hub connecting the wider African market.

“From a tourism perspective, this route is transformational. Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy. It has a population of over 220 million people, a rapidly expanding and sophisticated middle class, and a culture of travel that is well established. Through connectivity, this single route provides Barbados with more accessibility, far beyond the borders of the West African travelling public.
