Call for kidney donation laws

Calls are being made for Government to enact legislation allowing Barbadians to donate kidneys.

They came from doctors, members of the Barbados Kidney Association and kidney disease patients attending a lecture by consultant transplant nephrologist Dr Nerissa Jurawan at the Courtyard by Marriott in Hastings, Christ Church.

She told her audience last Thursday, which included dialysis patients and people living with transplanted kidneys, that there were 400 people attending the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for dialysis services.

Jurawan forecast another 100 being added to that list due to more people suffering with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and high blood sugar levels, which can contribute to kidney disease. (HH)
