That was the explanation given yesterday by first-time gun offender Rawle Anthony Caesar as he sought more time in which to pay the remaining $15 000 of a gun fine imposed by the No. 4 Supreme Court last year.
Caesar, of Kingsland Terrace, Christ Church, was back for a review after he had pleaded guilty at a previous Session of the Continuous Sittings to having a Taurus G2C 9mm semi-automatic pistol, and ten rounds of ammunition, on September 29, 2023.
Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell had fined Caesar $26 000 for the illegal gun and ordered him to pay $10 000 of it immediately. The remaining $16 000 is due by December 30, 2026, with an alternative of six years in prison. The judge had also fined him $6 000 by December 30, 2026, for the ammunition or six years in prison in default.
The matter was prosecuted by Senior State Counsel Paul Prescod.
Yesterday, Caesar admitted he had a balance of $15 000 outstanding after paying another $1 000.
“I brought in a paper [yesterday] morning ’cause I went surgery two weeks ago,” he said, adding that medical procedure had prevented him from working.
However, he explained he was due back to work later this month so “I will be able to bring some money”. He further said his fine was due by the end of December but asked for an extension.
Justice Smith-Bovell told the gunman he got more time “than normal”.
“So there is no extension coming. You got a whole year and four months. Normally I don’t give people that kind of time,” she said before setting December 18 as the next date for review. (HLE)
