Sada Williams delivered Barbados’ first medal of the Commonwealth Games, with a hard-fought silver in the women’s 400 metres in Glasgow, Scotland, earlier today.
The reigning Commonwealth Games champion, who made history with gold in Birmingham four years ago, clocked 50.99 seconds to finish second behind Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley, who won in 50.21. Williams held off Nigeria’s Ella Onojuvwevwo by just one hundredth of a second to claim the runner-up spot.
“I am feeling great. I am happy for the silver medal for Barbados,” she said in the post-race interview.
The 27-year-old entered the final after a 51.85-second semi-final and produced her best when it mattered, adding another major medal to a career that already includes a World Championship bronze medal and Barbados’ national record of 49.75 seconds.
While Williams fell short of defending her Commonwealth title, her silver ensured Barbados ended the Games with a place on the medal table. (NM)
