The Barbados Consumer Empowerment Network Inc. (BCEN) is concerned about the heavy financial burden it says consumers are being asked to carry as the country transitions to renewable energy.
In a statement yesterday, BCEN executive chairman Maureen Holder said the objective “must not simply be to protect the financial viability of the utility but also to protect consumers”.
“By all means we have to ensure that Barbados achieves a reliable, modern and renewable electricity system at a cost that is fair, transparent, and sustainable for the consumers who ultimately will be paying the bill,” she added.
Holder was giving BCEN’s response to the Fair Trading Commission’s (FTC) August 14 decision on Barbados Light & Power Company’s (BL&PC) Application For Preapproval of Synchronous Condensers (SCOs) Investments and Cost Recovery Through The (Clean Energy Transition Rider) CETR.
