VISUALLY IMPAIRED BARBADOS Community College student Janeil Odle was presented with the Caribbean Catalyst Kregg Nurse Memorial Scholarship today.
The award, which was initiated in 2005, goes to an individual with a disability who has successfully completed at least one year of post-secondary school education and is continuing their formal education at a recognized tertiary educational institution.
It was presented during the 2014 Barbados’ Best Employers awards luncheon at Hilton Barbados.
Odle is completing her studies in law and literatures in English at the Barbados Community College and has been offered a place in the law faculty of the University of the West Indies.
She is an aspiring lawyer who would also like to get into politics.
Meanwhile, University of the West Indies student Jalisa Robinson, who was diagnosed with anthrogryposis multiplex congenita, was the other finalist for the scholarship. She received a monetary contribution.
Graydon Sealy Secondary School student Toni Wharton, who became deaf at the age of two, was also presented with a special award.
Nurse, a certified general accountant who was affected by muscular dystrophy, was described as “a champion for the integration of persons with disabilities into the mainstream of all aspects of their communities”. (NB)
