Julian Hunte, a 44-year-old trade unionist and assistant registrar at the University of the West Indies (UWI), was sworn in this morning as the seventh Independent Senator, replacing Toni Moore.

Hunte is the assistant registrar responsible for industrial relations at the UWI. He has 20 years of experience in the trade union movement, also having worked in the private sector.

The new Senator said he believed this placed him in a good position to represent the interests of labour in the Senate.

Governor General Dame Sandra Mason said Hunte was chosen as that background qualified him for the position. (GC)
