For many years he had heard about “this wonderful country called Barbados” and dreamed of one day visiting its shores.

Now, Captain Sir Tom Moore has realised that dream, thanks to the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. and British Airways.

The 100-year-old former British Army officer who gained international fame for his efforts at raising millions of pounds for Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) during the coronavirus pandemic in the run-up to his 100th birthday, is finally in Barbados.

On April 6, 2020, at the age of 99, he began to walk laps of his garden in aid of NHS Charities Together, with the goal of raising £1 000 by his 100th birthday. In the 24-day course of his fundraising, his walk raised over £32.79 million.

The trip to Barbados represents the second tick-off of the World War II veteran’s long bucket list.

“Barbados is everything I heard it was,” Sir Tom told the Weekend Nation on Wednesday afternoon, speaking from the verandah of the West Coast villa where he and his family are staying. (GC)
