New lawyer Janeil Odle has promised that she and her fellow attorneys will maintain the good ethical practices and standards of the profession, even as they adapt and modify the way they work in “these unprecedented times”.
Odle was speaking on behalf of her 15 colleagues as they were admitted to the Bar to practise law yesterday. They were the second cohort to be admitted, with the first 32 being called at the end of last month.
Addressing a full sitting of judges, led by new Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham, the 26-year-old Odle, who became the first blind lawyer in Barbados, said the new members of the profession were aware of the standards which they must uphold.
“We are aware that we must at all times adhere to the Code of Ethics, and maintain and uphold all ethical standards in our professional and personal lives,” she said as she read from her speech in braille.
“Our reputations are invaluable and we must hold on to our integrity and remain honest. Our duties to the court, to each other, to the client, should never be forgotten. (HLE)
