VICE CHANCELLOR of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, was yesterday recognised for his global advocacy for reparatory justice, equality and economic development for people of the African diaspora.

On the day of the United States national holiday when the life and work of the late civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr were celebrated, the US National Action Network (NAN) presented Sir Hilary with its Martin Luther King Jr 2021 Global Award For Peace And Freedom, at a virtual breakfast.

Renowned American scientist Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who has been in the vanguard of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, received the Lifetime Community Service Award. US politician and lawyer Stacey Abrahams, who led the recent campaign in Georgia that resulted in the historic win of that state by the Democratic Party, was also given the Peace And Freedom Award.

Also honoured were Hispanic-American Sindy Benavides for her work for the upliftment of the Hispanic-American people in the US; eight-year-old Cavanaugh Bell, bestowed with the Martin Luther King Youth Award, and executive director of the National Black Nurses’ Association, Dr Millicent Gotham.
