Carifta chess doubts

The 2021 CARIFTA Junior Chess Championships are in limbo after the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) declared their inability to host this year’s tournament due to COVID-19 concerns.

The GCF wrote officially to the Confederation of Chess for the Americas (CCA) late last month to indicate their social and financial constraints as well as to formally hand over their rights to host the championships.

President of the Barbados Chess Federation, Alan Herbert told MIDWEEK SPORT Guyana’s decision is already impacting local players who had their hopes pinned on this year’s championships after last year’s event was also cancelled amid COVID-19 concerns.

“The CCA has to decide the next steps to take, and they haven’t met yet to determine what to do. Guyana may be asked to consider hosting the Games later in the year or we may proceed with an online event or hybrid event,” Herbert explained. (NM)
