Head of the COVID-19 Monitoring Unit, Ronald Chapman and his team shut down four parties today, as the fight continues against coronavirus (COVID-19).
The announcement was made by head of the COVID-19 Communications Unit, Ambassador Liz Thompson, during the nationally televised press conference from Ilaro Court.
“People are not necessarily wearing their masks and they’re exceeding the number allowed. I am asked to remind you that it is not legal to have mass gatherings. This can result in up to one year in prison or a fine of up to $50 000,” she said.
Thompson said while the intention was not to criminalise anyone, health officials had to protect people and communities.
“Over the last couple of days I’m hearing of more men being found COVID-positive. There are more than 700 men, nearly 800, who have tested positive for COVID since January, and the women over 400. You can see there is a significant gap there,” Thompson said.
Government has implemented a national pause from February 3 to 17 to combat the spread of the virus. Today, Barbados also paused for prayer as part of this battle.
