A family of 17 in Phillips Road, St Stephen’s Hill, Black Rock, St Michael whose house was destroyed by fire earlier today will be getting assistance from Government.

Member of Parliament for the area Ronald Toppin told Nation News that he had contacted Minister of People’s Empowerment Cynthia Forde, who in turn contacted the Welfare Department, which will be sourcing temporary shelter for the family.

The fire reportedly began in the home of 21-year-old Jefferson Husbands and quickly spread to the others. He said he was awakened by the smell of smoke.

Police reported the fire occurred around 12:30 a.m. today at the two-storey wood and wall house which featured seven self-contained living quarters.

“I realised I couldn’t breathe and by the time I look around, I saw a red light and nuff smoke. I run downstairs and fill a bucket with water, but by the time I get back, everything burn up,” Husbands said.

Family members said they lost almost everything and did not know what to do next.

Of the 17 people affected, there were 11 adults and six children –  aged one to 15.

While the main structure was destroyed, the rest of the house suffered water damage.

Three fire tenders and 12 personnel responded and extinguished the fire. The property was reported to be insured. (CA)
