As the sun rose yesterday morning, members of a family of 17 were pondering where they would spend the night after a fire left them homeless and unable to work or attend online school.

They all lived in a two-storey complex at Phillips Road, St Stephen’s Hill, St Michael, comprising eight separate homes and apartments.

The fire started around midnight yesterday in the home of 21-year-old Jefferson Husbands, quickly engulfing it. He said he was asleep when he smelled smoke.

“I was in the front house lying down around 11:48 p.m. I realised I couldn’t breathe and by the time I look around, I saw red light and ‘nuff’ smoke. I run downstairs and fill a bucket with water but by the time I get back, everything was done up,” he said. (CA)
