Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley is concerned about the tensions which he says exist in Barbados’ energy sector.

The St Michael West representative has also questioned whether Government’s plan to reserve 30 per cent of the renewable energy industry for Barbadians is sufficient.

He was speaking yesterday as the Estimates Debate started in the House of Assembly with the Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship in focus.

“It is my view that there are some tensions existing with respect to the energy sector and especially when we come to the business of the renewables. There is, in my view, significant potential interest for investment in the renewable energy sector in Barbados,” Atherley said.

“Now this is a relatively new sector for us. We want to be able to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel-based industries in Barbados and other activity, including transportation. And, of course, as we move within the context of our renewable energy agenda, there is going to be foreign investment interest expressed in this. (SC)
