Social activist Winston Clarke has taken a stand against employers who are intimidating their workers to take the COVID-19 vaccine.
He wrote a petition to the House of Assembly and is in the process of getting signatures, but his public stand at the J.T.C. Ramsay (Bussa) roundabout on Saturday morning lasted about an hour before it was broken up by police.
Clarke arrived around 9:30 a.m. and using a loudspeaker, spoke out against the act.
Motorists pulled over and signed the petition and those in ear shot of what was going on signed the petition as well. He gained more than 20 signatures.
Some of those who supported the cause lingered and watched him as he walked up and down the ABC Highway talking about the injustices of intimidating workers to take something that was not mandatory.
Around 10:30 a.m., three police officers arrived and after a discussion with Clarke, told him that it was considered a gathering and had to come to a halt. There were about ten people, including Clarke, who were asked to leave.
Clarke said this gave his cause more momentum, as some of his supporters recorded the incident on their cellphones.
“I’m just saying that we should not be ostracised because there are some people who are employees of certain institutions who are contacting me and saying that they are being discriminated [against], they are being intimidated because they have not taken a vaccine,” he said.
He is also complaining that “big business” was allowed to operate during the lockdown, but small business people were closed and could not earn an income, impacting their lives in a major way. (SB)
