More government-funded homes will be constructed within the next two years in the City of Bridgetown.

Minister of Housing Dr William Duguid made that announcement on Tuesday during the groundbreaking of the National Housing Corporation’s (NHC) latest housing project at Whitepark Road, St Michael.

Over the next 18 months, the state will be erecting the complex which will be made up of five quads, each containing four units. It will be obliquely opposite the Wesleyan Church.

Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for the City, Jeffrey Bostic, and NHC Chairman Morton Holder attended to break ground on the lot.

Holder said they intended to reduce the great need for housing in the country.

“We continue to work closely with all of our partners to ensure we can provide housing solutions. With these quads we are about to build it will augment the housing stock that we have,” Holder said.

Bostic acknowledged that housing was in high demand in the area.

“Unfortunately, the housing requirements for the people in the City of Bridgetown remain high on the priority list, so this will allow some people to get rental units and we will continue to see where we can find housing within The City housing spaces,” Bostic said.

The NHC will be carrying out a bulk of the work on the project. (TG)
