Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says classism and discrimination are at the root of the controversy involving cook shop owner Ross Ashton on Good Friday.
Yesterday at Grantley Adams International Airport, following the arrival of the first tranche of vaccines through the COVAX facility, Mottley said the incident was blown out of proportion because it involved a small businessman.
Police had stopped a luncheon organised by Ashton at Deacons Road, St Michael, but then allowed it to continue after Mottley questioned officers, with Ashton’s phone on speaker mode, on whether any COVID-19 protocols had been breached.
Since Saturday, the Prime Minister has been consistently refuting claims that she did something wrong.
“Fundamentally, this therefore is for me an issue, regrettably, of class and discrimination in this country . . . . We have too many instances where it is okay for one set and not the other set,” she said yesterday. (SB)
